We begin our adventure at the pioneer Center of the Arts, where you will find the Water master standing watch over the city. From there, spend some time strolling the streets of the Historic District, where many historic public buildings and private homes stand as reminders of a bygone era.

St. George Social Hall & Opera House

These buildings served as the cultural center of St. George from 1875 until 1935.

St. George Art Museum

The building that now houses the Art Museum was at one time a warehouse used by U & I Sugar Company to store sugar seeds.

Old Court House

Construction of the courthouse began in 1866 and was completed in 1876.

Mormon Tabernacle

This building is a tribute to the industry of the early settlers. It took 13 years to complete.

Judd Store

The home behind the store was built in 1879. The store was built later. The store is still open for business.

Brigham Young Winter Home

Brigham Young became St. George's first "snow bird", living the cold behind to spend the winters in the temperate of St. George.

The morning dawned bright and clear January 23, 2007. My wife and I were students in a class sponsored by Dixie State College called Exploring. This class meets twice a month on a Saturday and goes on a one day off roading trip. There are usually eight to twelve 4 wheel drive vehicles that take the trip. This day our instructor, eighty eighty year old LaVoid Levitt, took us on a trip to Lovel Wash in Nevada. LaVoid grew up in Southern Utah and claims he knows every road in Southern Utah and the stories that go with them. We have been on many trips with this class and LaVoid carries on a constant chatter about what we are viewing. We use CB radios in our vehicles so that he can communicate with us as we travel along the trail. These trips are always very fascinating. My wife grew up in this area and she has told me on several occasions that she had no idea that all of the roads and areas that we have explored even existed. Once one leaves the paved road a very fascinating vista opens up to the explorer. Southern Utah provides unlimited excitement and vistas to both the first time and the experienced off roader.
